Saoirse Ronan is giving kudos to costar Paul Mescal for his dedication to acting.

For Harper’s Bazaar’s September 2023 cover story, Ronan reveals the first time she recognized the Irish actor’s onscreen star power—and, no, it wasn’t in Hulu’s adaptation of Normal People.

“The first time I saw Paul act was in a commercial for Denny’s sausages in Ireland,” she tells Bazaar. “He’ll kill me for mentioning it, but—I’m not actually joking—that was the first time I went, ‘Oh, who’s that guy? He’s really good.’”

Mescal and Ronan star opposite each other in the forthcoming adaptation of Iain Reid’s 2018 science-fiction novel, Foe. In the film, directed by Garth Davis, Mescal plays a rural Midwestern farmer named Junior, who gets the chance to live in outer space. He leaves behind his wife, Hen (Ronan), who remains at home with an AI version of him.

Another one of Mescal’s costars, Andrew Scott, echoes Ronan’s sentiments. (Scott will star opposite Mescal in Andrew Haigh’s upcoming adaptation of the 1987 Taichi Yamada novel Strangers.)

“I believe who you are always comes through in some way, your attitude toward something. And that’s what I think he has: just this incredible, gentle, intelligent Irish soul,” the Fleabag star tells Bazaar of his impression of Mescal. “It sounds like an unusual thing to say, that somebody who’s at [his] stage of life is just interested in creating a body of work, but he really, genuinely is.”
