Sandra Oh's mother makes Emmys history by wearing traditional Korean hanbok to awards
Last night, Sandra Oh made history at the Emmy Awards 2018 after becoming the first Asian woman to be nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
But it was her mother who really stole the spotlight on Korean culture by wearing a traditional hanbok to the awards ceremony.
The Korean Canadian actress’ parents, Young-nam Oh and husband Joon-soo Oh, attended the star-studded event as the 47-year-old’s guests and her mother’s traditional outfit was widely applauded on Twitter.

One social media user wrote, “Is this the first time a Korean woman has worn a hanbok to the Emmys red carpet? I LOVE THIS SO MUCH”.
While another praised the actress’ mother for representing East Asia on television, as they tweeted: “Sandra Oh’s mother is wearing a hanbok – and has done more for East Asian representation on television than all the broadcasts networks combined”.
The hanbok is traditional dress worn in both North and South Korea for formal occasions.

But that wasn’t all, as Young-nam Oh later gushed over her daughter’s nomination during an interview on the red carpet.
When asked how much she loves ‘Killing Eve’, the BB thriller starring Sandra Oh, she simply pulled her daughter in for a huge kiss to which Sandra joked: “Omg that happened on film”.

According to the BBC, it’s not common for parents in many Asian cultures to openly show affection towards their children in public – another big win for representation on screen.
Sandra Oh was nominated for her role as Eve Polastri in BBC drama ‘Killing Eve’ but the award was given to Claire Foy for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in ‘The Crown’.
