RSPB reports record numbers for rare wetland bird
The RSPB has seen a resurgence in the number of bearded tits, despite the rare bird nearly disappearing from the UK.
According to the wildlife charity, no fewer than 120 pairs of bearded tits nested at the charity's Blacktoft Sands reserve in East Yorkshire last year. The site saw 500 fledged youngsters, more than double the success rate of previous years.
The small bird, identified by its long tail and cinnamon-coloured fur, is mainly found in large reedbeds where it feeds on insects and seeds. Sadly, their numbers were severely reduced by long, cold winters in the 20th century, with the species becoming restricted to a handful of sites in East Anglia.
Their recent success can be pinned on dedicated conservation efforts to restore and protect wetlands. As well as the bearded tit, species also prospering in the UK include the Common Crane, Eurasian Bittern, and Eurasian Spoonbill.
Pete Short, RSPB Humber Estuary Reserves Manager, said: "RSPB Blacktoft Sands hosts England's largest intertidal reedbed and is a fantastic example of why wetlands are so important and why it is urgent that we raise national and global awareness about wetlands in order to reverse their rapid loss and encourage actions to conserve and restore them.
"Watching our bearded tits darting around the reedbeds is a special nature spectacle. Carefully managing wetlands is important for some of our rarest species and we're delighted that our management of the reedbeds is paying off.
"Wetlands are important to us all and without them we would lose so much."
