Why the room fell silent for Kate and William at the BAFTAs 2019

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were the VIP guests at the BAFTAs on Sunday night, and arrived to huge cheers as they walked the red carpet.

But Twitter users couldn’t help, but notice that the Royal Albert Hall fell completely silent when the couple made their way down the steps to take their seats at the front of the auditorium.

All that could be heard was the sound of camera shutters and it didn’t go unnoticed by the royal couple.

Kate laughed and said: “It’s so quiet,” while husband William quipped: “Let’s sit quickly.”

While some people on social media referred to their entrance as “awkward,” it’s not the first time the room has fell silent upon a royal arrival.

The Duke and Duchess attended last year’s BAFTAs ceremony, when Kate was pregnant with Prince Louis, and the audience stood quiet as they entered. Someone broke the silence with an impromptu cheer and clapping, but it’s usually seen as a sign of respect for royalty.

William has been President of the Academy since 2010 and presented the Fellowship award to Martin Scorsese’s longstanding editor, Thelma Schoonmaker.

The couple also met with various winners after the ceremony, including Olivia Colman, Letitia Wright, Spike Lee and Rachel Weisz.

Kate wore a show-stopping white one shoulder gown by Alexander McQueen with Jimmy Choo glittery pumps and Princess Diana’s diamond and south sea pearl earrings.
