Roast potatoes are a staple of British cuisine, particularly during the festive season.

However, many of us may not be making the most of our spuds.

Despite our best culinary efforts, it appears that a large number of us have been preparing roast potatoes incorrectly for years. Chef Kelly Scott, also known as @kellyscleankitchen on TikTok, has debunked a common myth about roasting potatoes.

Contrary to popular belief, frying the potatoes first to achieve a "super crispy" texture is not necessary. Instead, the chef suggests a simple trick to ensure perfect roasties every time.

In a video tutorial, she explained: "These are burnished potatoes, a rosemary and garlic British potato. That's the crispiest russet potato ever, and the key is to first boil them in water for three to five minutes before roasting them."

She continued: "This isn't to cook them or anything, but it removes the excess starch, because white potatoes are super starchy, which can lead to a soggy and gummy potato, which is why you boil them first.".

The boiling process eliminates surface starch, allowing the potatoes to become extremely crispy in the oven. So, before roasting your potatoes, make sure to boil them briefly.

If you have a preferred roasting method, feel free to use it. Roasting times typically range from 20 to 35 minutes, depending on your desired level of crispiness.

The video quickly racked up over 1,000 views and sparked a flurry of cooking chatter among viewers. Many agreed that the potatoes appeared exceptionally "good".

One user expressed gratitude, commenting: "Oh great. I learnt something new today. Thank you." Another lamented not having the right equipment, writing: "Makes me wish I had an oven."

A third praised the culinary skills on display, saying, "You're my favourite TikTok chef." While a fourth, despite dietary restrictions, remarked: "I can't eat potatoes, but I watched since they look scrumptious."
