As you might expect, Rihanna opened the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards with a statement. It wasn’t necessarily a statement on her singing skills — she was quite openly lip-syncing throughout the performance — but her bold dancing to a mix of her hits was more about just how much she’s owned this show for almost a decade, clearly earning this year’s Video Vanguard Award.

The 28-year-old chose to make a statement through her outfit, which somewhat expected from the singer at this point. Her personal style is generally a mix of street and couture, one that few others can pull off. But in case some dare to try, it was labeled front and center as a creation of Hood by Air.

Lit up in pink lighting, the white T-shirt with (lipstick-matching) red borders and lettering recalled pure Rihanna IDGAF style. It reminds us of the way she can wear pajamas in public and look drop-dead gorgeous. While her dancers were all in pale pink lace-up corsets, she wore what looked a lot like a jacket, albeit elaborately laced up around her waist like a corset with the sleeves swinging from her hips, accentuating her moves. She also contrasted her layered and cut-out pants with … yep, those are fuzzy slippers. Do not try to enter the club in those, readers at home.
