A migraine does a great job at stopping you in your tracks, especially when you have a full list of tasks that need to be done. However, you might not need to suffer for long as a TikTok clip has revealed a simple hack that could potentially alleviate or even eradicate the painful headache.

Dr Kunal Sood MD, who frequently posts health-related content online, explained how the method works. In the clip, a woman details how she struggles with frequent migraines and has found that the way to "get rid of it fast" is to immerse her feet in hot water.

Dr Sood, who is affiliated with the National Spine and Pain Centers in Germantown, Maryland, US, goes onto elaborate by saying: "If you suffer from migraine headaches, here's a hack to try which has zero side effects and may help. Soaking your feet in hot water - but why exactly does this help?"

He explains: "This will dilate the blood vessels in your foot, pulling blood away from your head, which will ease the pressure on the blood vessels causing your migraine. Which will in turn decrease your pain." This simple hack has gone viral, with it being viewed over 16.8million times, reports Surrey Live.

Some commenters have been praising this hack, with one saying: "I definitely need to do this. Never heard of this." While others have hailed this idea a success from previous personal use: "I've been doing this for years, I sit on the edge of the tub and run the hot water."

A few people have also been sharing their own tricks and tips to alleviate a migraine. One person advised: "I put my hands and feet in hot water with a frozen bag of peas on my neck. migraine gone in about 10-15 min with no gross feeling after."

Another individual advised getting a daith piercing as a remedy for migraines. This is a piercing that goes through the ear's innermost cartilage fold, known as the crus of the helix. However, it should be noted that there has been no scientific evidence to show that piercings have an impact on pain receptors or alleviate migraines.

Sometimes there can be warning signs before a migraine kicks in, known as an aura, involving:

  • problems with your sight, such as seeing zigzag lines or flashing lights

  • numbness or a tingling that feels like pins and needles

  • feeling dizzy

  • difficulty speaking

Migraine episodes can span from two hours to three days, with certain symptoms appearing up to two days prior to the onset of head pain and may persist after the headache has subsided. For easing migraines, the following are suggested by the NHS:

  • try sleeping or lying down in a darkened room during a migraine

  • try to avoid things you know trigger your migraines, such as certain foods

  • stay well hydrated and limit how much caffeine and alcohol you drink

  • try to keep to a healthy weight

  • eat meals at regular times

  • get regular exercise

  • get plenty of sleep

  • try to manage your stress

If you have frequent or increasingly severe migraines lasting longer than normal, if you're experiencing them over once a week, or if they become difficult to manage, the NHS advises contacting your GP.
