Richard Osman has welcomed a new family member, with the television star announcing the news via social media.

The former Pointless host and The Thursday Murder Club author took to Instagram to share that he had adopted a cat from the RSPCA, with his new pet - Lottie - set to join fellow feline Liesl at home.

“Please welcome beautiful Lottie to the family,” he wrote on Instagram, with the post including an adorable photo of Lottie. “Adopted from the brilliant RSPCA in Brighton, and she hasn't stopped purring or playing since we got her home.

“She and Liesl have yet to meet face to face, but I think they will both appreciate how much Instagram would like them to become firm friends.”

Osman received several messages from fans and followers, with one writing: “Adorable! And great to see you advocating for adoption.”

“Sir, how are you going to write a new book with a kitten in the house?” added a second, referencing Osman’s burgeoning career as an author.

“Oh my goodness she is a beauty. Lucky you and lucky Lottie,” commented a third follower, with a fourth writing: “Well done Richard, the joy you get from adopting is so rewarding.”

Osman, who left the main Pointless show in 2022, also found fame with his 2020 novel The Thursday Murder Club, which is due to be adapted into a feature film and stage play, with the novelist recently teasing details of the latter.

“The adaptation has to go through the lens of being in the theatre. Lots of small things,” he said. “It has to be an hour first half, there has to be an interval because that's how theatre pays for things and then there has to be a shorter second half. But that's not a million miles different from a movie. It's very different to a book.

“But I think, by and large, when you adapt something to a different medium the technical thing is interesting, but there's a million great theatre producers and I'm doing The Thursday Murder Club adaptation with a brilliant writer called Tom Basden. So you have people who know what they're doing and directors who know what they're doing.”

There is currently no release date for The Thursday Murder Club.
