When Richa Moorjani finished filming the fourth and final season of the hit Netflix coming-of-age dramedy Never Have I Ever in 2022, she wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye to everything about her character Kamala.

“There’s a lamp in the corner of my living room that has lotus flowers on it. That’s actually from the set,” Moorjani, 35, tells PEOPLE in this week's issue. “‘Kamala’ means ‘lotus flower,’ so it was very meaningful to me. I wanted it to feel like I was bringing a part of my home from set to my real home.”

The sense of connection the actress— who also stars in the latest season of Fargo—feels in her space now is a pleasant respite from the drama that came with moving into the two-bedroom, two-story condo with her husband, Rishi, and their shih tzu Teddy.

They first drove past the property in their dream neighborhood in Pasadena when it was still under construction and waited patiently through two years of building delays to move in.

When they finally did, L.A. was hit with a season of record rainfall that caused massive leaks. “We had to tear down walls and ceilings and almost rebuild the unit,” she says.

Needless to say, when they finally got to decorating, a sense of calm was key. “I wanted my home to feel like a safe space and a sacred space,” she explains. “I didn’t really know what my vision was, to be honest. I just knew that that’s how I wanted it to feel."

She got a helping hand from the online decorating service Havenly, whose designers combined the California native’s love for neutrals and earthy textures with nods to her Indian heritage. “I didn’t want my place to look like a rainbow or anything, but I wanted to have little pops of color that would represent my culture and brighten it up.”

One space, however, is an all-cream dream. "When I go to sleep, I need a space without too many distractions,” she says of her bedroom’s pale color scheme. The wall got a stylish upgrade with peel-and-stick wallpaper in a neutral tropical motif.

Her designer, she explains, "sent me several really incredible layouts of what it would look like in different versions. She would use whatever I already had in the unit, like my couch, and put together an entire mood board. Just seeing it visually like that was so helpful rather than just talking about it."

Her favorite feature? “I really love the gallery wall,” she says. “Pretty much all of it ties in my culture and speaks to my personality.” (She picked up the gold and white buddha artwork on a trip to Bali!)

The final result is a joyful retreat for the star, who just wrapped seven weeks of filming in Thailand for a new project still under wraps. It’s “not a forever home,” she admits, “because we’ll need a bigger space eventually when we have a family, but for now it’s perfect for us.”
