Even the best of us have gotten a little distracted while cooking dinner and ended up burning food onto our best saucepan. A burnt pan is a pain, but it doesn't have to mean the end for your kitchen companion. Here's how to get it back in tip-top condition without too much elbow grease.

How to clean a burnt pan

  1. Fill the pan with water and throw in a dishwasher tablet or 1 tbsp biological washing powder.

  2. Place it on the hob and bring to the boil. Leave to simmer for around ten minutes. All those nasty burnt bits will simply lift away, leaving your pan as good as new.

  3. Repeat as necessary, then wash thoroughly as normal. You can also use this method for hob-safe roasting tins.

GHI Tip: As always, prevention is better than cure. For cooking scrambled eggs or other foods that tend to stick, invest in a good-quality, hard-anodised saucepan. Simply wipe with a sponge and the mess will usually come right off.
