Reese Witherspoon Shares the One Holiday Tradition She'll Never Do
Reese Witherspoon is a self-professed jack-of-all-trades, from being an award-winning actress to a lifestyle guru who single-handedly brought back Mason jars. She has also embraced her multiple talents with the release of her 2018 cookbook, Whiskey In a Teaspoon, in which she shares mouthwatering homemade baking recipes like her grandmother’s sour cream cake. But there’s one holiday item she’ll never make from scratch.
While celebrating the release of a new Christmas-themed installment in her children’s series, Busy Betty, the Draper James founder admitted that, while she ascribes to the belief that “homemade gifts are the best,” there’s one popular Christmas treat that she’ll never make by herself after a recipe gone wrong.
In an interview with People published on December 8, Witherspoon hilariously shared that, while her family’s favorite holiday traditions include putting together their own gingerbread houses, they always assemble the festive structures using a gingerbread house kit.
“Back when I was a ‘do anything that Martha Stewart says’ woman, I tried to make my own house and it was an epic disaster,” Witherspoon explained. “My engineering was not up to par. It just collapsed.”
There’s always pressure during the holidays to make everything from scratch — but as Ina Garten always says, store-bought really is just fine.
While TikTok might be full of people stressing over creating the perfect tablescape or holiday feast, Witherspoon’s admission is a timely reminder to embrace the shortcuts whenever you can — especially when you’ll still have a beautiful gingerbread house at the end. Plus, you can pick up a kit during your next run to World Market or Target for just a few dollars.
