Reese Witherspoon has revealed that she's open to the idea of a third season of Big Little Lies and that she's still in touch with her former co-stars.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, alongside producer Lauren Neustadter, Witherspoon discussed the prospect of reprising her role in the hit HBO series, saying: "There is certainly a deep desire for all of us to connect and create those characters again."

Witherspoon, who starred alongside Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz and Shailene Woodley, added that the cast have discussed a potential reunion – even going as far as to reveal that she and Neustadter had been talking about the idea fairly recently.

"Somebody asked me the other day, 'What co-stars do you talk to more than any other?' It’s absolutely the Big Little Lies cast. We’re always talking and texting," she continued.

Despite interest in a Big Little Lies reunion, Witherspoon added that the death of director Jean-Marc Vallée would make creating a new season difficult for the cast. "Jean-Marc Vallée’s passing was really hard on us. He was our collaborator. He was our friend," she said.

"He was our brother. So much of that series was born of his imagination and his creativity, so it is hard to imagine a future without him. But there is certainly a deep desire for all of us to connect and create those characters again."

Witherspoon's comments come in contrast to creator and executive producer David E Kelley, who was doubtful of a third season. In an interview last year, he explained the busy schedules of the show's stars would make filming difficult.

"I'm not sure logistically how it could be done because everyone is so busy," he said.

"It [certainly] couldn't be done right away. Down the road? Maybe."

Big Little Lies airs on HBO in the US and on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
