Fine, thinning or breakage-prone hair is very common in women – and can be caused by anything from stress to a vitamin deficiency or menopause. The most common cause though is also the easiest to fix, overstyling with too much heat, too many products and the wrong tools.

This is because, when it comes to styling fragile hair, you need to be gentle. The tugging caused by vigorous brushing with the wrong type of hairbrush definitely won't help. Nor will brushing your hair when it's wet, washing your hair in very hot water, scraping hair back in to a tight tie or blow-drying on the highest heat setting.

'When your hair is fragile or has been through a lot of wear and tear, you have to baby it,' hairstylist Kirsten Patterson told Allure. That means investing in tools and products that provide a little extra TLC.

Luckily, Red's Beauty Director has found a hairbrush that 'feels as gentle as your fingers' – and is 'far and away the best for fine, breaking or thinning hair'.

The Manta Brush was created by a professional hairdresser with damage-prone hair in mind. Its specifically-designed bristles reduce snagging on even the most sensitive strands, meaning it expertly detangles the biggest knots without the risk of extra shedding or breakage. Hair is left shiny, smooth, static-free and easier to manage.

If you're concerned about hair loss, then it's worth speaking to your GP.
