For numismatists (that's coin collectors to you and me), certain designs are like gold dust. And if you happen to have one of these rare gems in your possession, you could be quids in by auctioning it off on platforms like eBay.
But how do you know which coins are the collector's Holy Grail?
Well, don't fret a coin guru has spilled the beans on the four elusive 50p pieces to keep your eyes peeled for.
In a viral TikTok video by @uk.coin, a chap reveals: "If you're down the shop, you're at the bank, you're at work, or wherever, these are just some coins to look out for in your change that you can sell for a lot more than 50p on eBay or Facebook."
He kicks off with a 2016 50p from the Beatrix Potter series, singling out the Jemima Puddleduck coin as one to watch. He advises: "If you come across this coin in your change, list it on eBay. You'll probably get £8-£10. Why not? It's a 50p coin."
The man pointed out a coin that is considered "one of the rarest in circulation", a triathlon-themed 50p from the series of coins celebrating London's 2012 Olympics. He shared that on eBay, this coin may sell for "about a tenner".
Although it's not grand, it sure beats its original worth of 50p.
Next up, he presented another commemorative memento from the 2012 London Olympics, a coin which demonstrates the offside rule in football. Inscribed on it are the words "offside explained" and an accompanying diagram showing the ins and outs of possibly being offside.
This item, he revealed, is "the rarest" in the Olympics coin collection, potentially raking in a sweet "£15 plus on eBay".
The final one was what he called "the rarest 50p you can get", safely showcased in its display case. Its a 2009 coin tributing 250-years since Kew Gardens was founded, with the iconic Great Pagoda gracing the coin along with the founding date - 1759 and 2009.
If you're lucky enough to stumble upon one of these in your spare change, the man says it could easily land you "an easy £150". Prices on the Britannia Coin Company site list a circulated version for £210, while eBay postings fluctuate between £110 and £270 so it's worth holding onto if you ever find one!
TikTok users were gobsmacked after a video revealed the potential fortune in rare 50p coins, with many confessing they might have unwittingly spent a small treasure.
One user exclaimed: "I had a Kew Gardens one until my son took it out of my purse for the ice cream van." Another shared their regret, saying: "I gave my offside rule one to a shopkeeper because I picked the wrong 50p."
And yet another sighed: "I got the last one as change once and I gave it to my corner shop for gum."
Some cheeky commenters even quipped they'd offer the man "two quid for the lot".
