Ikea drops final 80th anniversary collection Ikea

Ikea's sixth and final edition of the Nytillverkad collection has arrived. The Swedish furniture retailer has dived into its archive one more time as part of its 80th anniversary celebration to deliver a capsule collection of classic hero pieces with a contemporary twist. Highlights include a reimagining of the colourful Guide shelving unit that first launched in 1985 and a fancy new denim design of the Tajt easy chair from 1973. All things retro aside, the flatpack maestro has also previewed its Easter collection with some tablescaping essentials. The Tjärlek range features tinted candleholders and glasses, and colourful stoneware egg cups. Get a sneak peek at the new ranges before they hit the stores.

The Nytillverkad collection

Introducing Byakorre, formerly known as the Guide shelving unit, launched in 1985 and featured steel wire sides and colourful shelf edges to match the popular urban furnishing style of the time. Designer Niels Gammelgaard discovered he could get the shelves in different colourways without any extra costs, resulting in a characteristic shelving unit in six colours.

Ikea has transformed its 1973 Tajt easy chair into the modular Vårkumla chair bed in denim – a bold move! This new iteration invites relaxed, flexible living. Dubbed ‘the ultimate transformer’, there are two flat cushions with leather buttons, leather straps, and a rolled cushion held in place with a chrome-plated tubular stand. Put the cushions on top of each other for a comfortable chair or position them side by side for a simple yet functional mattress ideal for unexpected guests.

'Denim was well-known in clothing, but no one had thought of using it for furniture. That fresh thinking and thinking differently was very typical of Ingvar and Ikea,' says Lars Göran Peterson, former textile purchaser at Ikea.
