The Queen Wasn’t Upset by Harry and Meghan’s Controversial Oprah Interview, FWIW
Take a deep breath and get ready to rethink everything you think you know about the royal family’s inside drama. You know Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2021 Oprah interview, the one that everyone assumed had the rest of the royal fam collectively fuming? Turns out, the Queen wasn’t really fazed by it.
According to royal expert and biographer Gyles Brandreth, the late monarch was much more focused on how Harry and Meghan were doing than what they were saying in interviews and what business ventures they planned after their royal exit.
“I can tell you, because I know this, that the Queen was always more concerned for Harry’s well-being than about ‘this television nonsense,’ meaning both the Oprah Winfrey interview—which caused so much controversy—and the lucrative deal the Sussexes made with Netflix,” Brandreth writes in his upcoming biography Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, according to an excerpt published in the Daily Mail, adding that she was only “anxious that Harry should ‘find his feet’ in California and ‘find really useful things to do.’”
According to Brandreth, the Queen was not a part of any behind-the-scenes royal drama with Harry or Meghan. Apparently, she thought Harry was “perhaps a little over-in-love” with Meghan, but Brandreth insists that’s as close as she ever came to “uttering a word against the new Duchess of Sussex.”
“She liked Meghan and told lots of people so. And she did everything she could to make her future granddaughter-in-law feel welcome,” he writes.
The excerpt also hints at new revelations about the Queen’s final days in the book, including rumors that she was battling a rare form of cancer before her death—rumors that he says “would explain her tiredness and weight loss and those ‘mobility issues’ we were often told about during the last year or so of her life.”
“The truth is that Her Majesty always knew that her remaining time was limited,” Brandreth writes in the book, according to People. “She accepted this with all the grace you’d expect.”
