There’s always a good reason to order from Publix’s deli, which offers a wide variety of high-quality, affordable, customizable subs with fresh and clean ingredients, made in-house. And, while the grab-and-go section is excellent for convenience and affordability (with many options, from salads, dips, and spreads to heartier meals and subs), there’s nothing quite like using your imagination to customize a perfect meal from scratch. So, if you crave freedom, creativity, and novelty, the "Pubs subs" are your best move.

“As someone who has indulged in these delectable sandwiches on my way to work countless times, I can attest to the fresh ingredients, generous portions, and perfect balance of flavors that make each Publix sub a delicious and satisfying meal,” says HR director of Family Destinations Guide and Publix customer, Bonnie Whitfield.

What Makes the Publix Subs So Unique and Incredible

If this doesn’t scream dedication, I don’t know what will: “I live in Maryland, and I drive with my best friend out to Stafford, Virginia because that's the closest Publix just to get subs,” says Kathryn Broullire, owner of a Southern food blog, Worn Slap Out.

So what makes the Publix deli sandwiches well worth the trip and those extra miles? Publix offers a variety of fresh breads, baked in-house, including classic white and wheat, as well as specialty varieties, like Italian and multigrain. The chain recently announced the return of the special Tutto Pugliese bread, which occasionally makes a seasonal appearance, plus the new ability to turn Pub subs into salads. The selection of fillings is also impressive, as it features many different types of meats, cheeses, veggies, and condiments.

“The bread is the perfect combination of crusty on the outside and pillow soft on the inside, and you can choose from quite a few types of bread (sub, sliced bread, rolls, wrap, etc.),” Broullire says.

The smell’s also incredible, simply exuding freshness and that “homemade” feel. If you want to add meat, it’s always generously portioned and of great quality—you’ll never find slimy slices of meat at Publix! Other options for sub fixins range from basics, like shredded lettuce or sliced tomato, to different (even gourmet) cheese and types of peppers. You’ll never get bored or end up in a sandwich rut.

“Whether I'm in the mood for turkey, ham, or roast beef, or a vegetarian option, Publix has it all,” Whitfield says.

And, a pro tip from customers: always ask for the sandwich to be toasted when ordering in-house.

“Toasting your sub for an added layer of flavor and texture can enhance the overall experience and provide a satisfying crunch,” Whitfield says.

Maybe the biggest perk is that the subs are large, so you’ll get the most bang for your buck and fill up, keeping you satisfied until your next meal.

Fan-Favorite Sub Combinations

“One of my favorite Publix subs to get on my way to work is the Italian sub, as the combination of flavors from the tender tavern ham, capicola, Genoa salami, and provolone cheese is simply irresistible,” Whitfield shares.

Another go-to Whitfield recommends is the Chicken Cordon Bleu, which has melted Swiss cheese over seasoned rotisserie chicken, hot tavern ham, and bacon—it’s a real meat-lovers sub! Brouille loves the Chicken Tenders Sub for its nostalgic and comforting taste.

Best Tips When Ordering Subs at Publix

If you have time to design a sub instead of snagging one from the grab-and-go section, then do so. Customize by browsing a selection of meats, cheeses, toppings, and sauces for a unique and flavorful sandwich combo. Always keep an eye out for Publix's weekly deals and sub of the day, too, Whitfield notes. Generally, subs are affordable without deals, but the extra discount doesn’t hurt.

You can also download the Publix app to order via your phone for convenience, as needed. “This allows you to place your order in advance and pick it up in-store, to save you time and streamline the process,” Whitfield says.

Don't hesitate to speak with Publix’s knowledgeable and friendly staff, either, for insights and suggestions that’ll help you craft your “dream” sub. And, of course, pair your sandwiches with the fan-favorite Publix bakery cakes for a complete grocery haul.
