A private Loch Lomond island with a cottage, derelict bothies and a jetty has entered the market.

Just under 182 acres and home to ancient woodland, Inchlonaig is a breathtaking island with views to Ben Lomond. If you want to snap up a piece of Scottish history, then this could be just the opportunity for you.

As well as being home to 800 yew trees, the island also features a two-bedroom period cottage, three bothies and a jetty for launching and landing boats.

The cottage has previously been used for holiday rentals, but is a great spot for a keen homes enthusiast, with many development opportunities including the renovation of the bothies, subject to necessary consents and planning permissions.

The history of the island is nothing short of fascinating. It's mentioned in the charter of 1541 and was used as pasture land for cattle in the 1600s. A century later a deer park was created by Sir John Colquhoun of Luss, and fallow and white deer can still be seen on the island.

As for the yew trees, they can be traced back as far as Robert the Bruce, who is said to have planted them on the island in the 14th century. Yew was used for the making of longbows and it's thought the royal archers used bows made from Inchlonaig wood for the Battle of Bannockburn.

Loch Lomond lies in the heart of the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, which contains 22 islands and 27 islets. Just a short distance away is the village of Luss, with all the local services you need from shops to restaurants, hotels, a pub, pier, primary school and church.

As well as loch cruises, the pier offers waterbus services linking Balloch, Inchcailloch, Balmaha and Rowardennan. What's more, the towns of Alexandria and Helensburgh are both within a 15 minute drive from Luss with even more local services.

'This is an exciting launch from a historic perspective. However, it also represents an incredible and rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Scottish heritage while enjoying the spectacular surroundings of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park,' says Cameron Ewer, a spokesperson for Savills.

'Inchlonaig Island is perhaps the ultimate in private retreats and a very special sale.'

The Inchlonaig Island in Loch Lomond is now on the market with Savills for £995,000.
