The Princess of Wales’ former piano teacher has composed a song to celebrate the King’s Coronation, with the hope that “all schools” in the UK will join in before the event.

Daniel Nicholls, 58, co-wrote the song, Defender of Us All, with his wife Sandra - and has sent a copy to the palace.

He taught the princess and her family to play the piano.

Mr Nicholls said he is awaiting a reply from the palace.

The Nicholls have sent the lyrics and music to schools in England and Scotland, and said they have received “very positive responses” so far, with some suggesting it could be sung at 11am on the Friday before the Coronation.

“Our aim is to get all schools to sing it on the Friday before the Coronation and then have the entire nation singing it on May 6,” Mr Nicholls said.

Mr Nicholls, who taught the Princess of Wales when she was between the ages of 11 and 13, and her brother James and sister Pippa, also wrote a song for her wedding to Prince William.

“It’s what we British are good at, on the day of the Coronation have the entire nation, even outside Westminster Abbey, singing together.”

Mrs Nicholls said: “It’s just light and fun and free, schools are loving it.

“A few have suggested doing it at 11am on the Friday before the Coronation.

“They want to do something for the whole celebration and this is a nice, easy song.

“If they don’t have someone to play the piano there’s a backing track and a video which they can sing to.

“It’s a nice, simple thing schools can do along with their tea parties.”

The recording, the sheet music and a backing track are all available at www.soundscool.org.

King Charles will be crowned alongside the Queen Consort on May 6 at Westminster Abbey, and will be followed by a weekend of events, including a concert at Windsor Castle.
