'Princess Charlotte is a royal 'superstar' – but this summer belongs to all of Kate and William's children'

Lucky Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will soon be waving goodbye to the classroom for another year as they begin their summer holidays. It couldn’t have come at a better time, following six months of setbacks and worries for their family.

And if one thing is for certain, the young trio will be looking forward to several fun-filled weeks – likely spearheaded by doting dad, Prince William, 42, while Kate, also 42, continues recovering from her cancer treatment.

“This year has obviously been incredibly difficult for all of them,” former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond exclusively tells OK!

“But, as the picture issued for William’s birthday of them jumping off a sand dune which was taken by the Princess of Wales shows, they are doing all they can to leap for joy at the prospect of things getting better,” Jennie adds.

It is this irrepressible sense of fun that the father-of-three brings with him, which continues to be so important for George, 10, Charlotte, nine, and Louis, six.

“William has shown us all what a great dad he is, making his family his priority no matter what criticism that provokes,” Jennie says. “It’s obvious that his children adore him and see him as the protector he is – just look at the photo of him standing facing the ocean with his arms around his kids.”

And William has never been one to shy away from enjoying a good time. He was recently filmed having the time of his life dancing to Taylor Swift’s smash hit Shake It Off at Wembley Stadium when he and his two eldest children attended the first London night of the star’s Eras Tour.

Proving that he is the ultimate cool dad, William, George and Charlotte then posed with Taylor, along with her American footballer boyfriend Travis Kelce, who later gave a surprising insight into the sweet meeting.

When he appeared on the latest episode of his New Heights podcast, Travis said, “I gotta say, Prince William was fantastic, but the highlight was Princess Charlotte. Prince George was great too. She was so adorable. Like, I cannot. She was a superstar. She had fire to her. She was asking questions… I love it when parents ask their kids to be present, be vocal… Encourage them to take a lead in the conversation.”

The royal children all attend Berkshire-based prep school Lambrook, located just a stone’s throw from the family’s home of Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Estate. And while Louis is still enjoying a relatively carefree education, the realities and stresses of school exams set in for both Prince George and Princess Charlotte as they both undertook important tests.

“Charlotte’s at school, Charlotte’s got exams,” William told one young fan at a recent engagement in Portsmouth. “Yes, she’s got tests – she wasn’t looking forward to it this morning. Hopefully it’s all gone well.”

Kate and William’s priorities have always been firmly based around protecting their children’s privacy and aiming to give them the type of childhood that Kate cherished when she was growing up. As a result, it is likely that the summer holidays will be full of exciting days out to places like Holkham Beach in Norfolk near their beloved Anmer Hall home.

Even though the Princess herself said that she is “not out of the woods” yet in her recovery, she will surely do everything she can to enjoy the warmer weather with her family.

“If Catherine’s medical condition allows, they will perhaps have a few days in the Scilly Isles – which is one of their ‘go-to places’ where they are pretty much left alone to enjoy the beaches and countryside during precious family time,” Jennie predicts.

“But if her treatment means she has to stay closer to home, they’ll love hunkering down at Anmer Hall – perhaps with some of the cousins and family visiting them there.

“Ever since her diagnosis, their absolute priority has been to keep life with their children as normal as possible. So, having their cousins from both sides of the family around will be exciting for the children.”

It was an especially eventful year for the Middleton family as Kate’s brother James welcomed his first child – a son named Inigo – with wife Alizée. So, with their new baby cousin and close friendships with their aunt Pippa’s three children, Arthur, Grace and Rose, there will certainly be lots of adventures in store this summer.

When George, Charlotte and Louis are not out exploring with young friends, it is likely that Kate will tap into her love of creative activities and do some baking with her three children – something which she has often admitted to enjoying around birthdays and for special occasions.

A trip to the Balmoral Estate in Scotland is also expected to be on the cards as the Royal Family continue Queen Elizabeth II’s much-loved tradition of spending the summer break at the historic castle in Royal Deeside.

The late Queen made her affection for Scotland very well-known and enjoyed annual visits there her entire life – whether on official duties or during down-time with her family. Just like his mother, King Charles also relishes his time there – making it clear that he will heed her example and maintain this special relationship.

It’s not just the Princess of Wales who will benefit from escaping to the haven Balmoral provides, as the King will too while he continues his cancer treatment.

“As [Queen] Camilla herself said, the King has been constantly in danger of trying to do too much too early in his recovery so some rest will give him the time he surely needs to gather his strength and make a full recovery before getting back to full-time duties,” Jennie points out. “Of course the summer break is coming up and I think that’s a good thing too. Hopefully, by the end of the year we shall have a royal family back to full fighting strength.”

The summer will be an exciting time for George in particular as he will celebrate his 11th birthday on 22 July. He will be preparing to enter his penultimate year at Lambrook, before heading off to be immersed in the new surroundings and exciting experiences of his next school.

“Even though George is approaching his last couple of years at Lambrook School, I’m sure William and Catherine want him to feel as settled as possible at this difficult time and so won’t be making a song and dance about what lies ahead and where he’ll go to school next,” Jennie says.

“So I think this summer will be one of focusing on Catherine slowly healing and getting stronger – joining in as many family activities like picnics, barbecues and beach games as possible and showing the children that despite the challenges life throws at you, a family that stands together, plays together, cries together and laughs together can get through the bad times and look to a much brighter future.”
