The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have shared a lovely photograph of the late Prince Philip with Prince George, alongside a moving message from Prince William about his grandfather, following the Duke of Edinburgh's death on Friday (9 April).

The post was shared on the royal couple's official @KensingtonRoyal Instagram account on Monday afternoon (12th April).

In his emotive tribute, the Duke of Cambridge paid homage to Prince Philip's life of service, saying: "My grandfather’s century of life was defined by service – to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and Queen, and to our family."

William also opened up about the bond between himself and his grandfather, and noted that wife Kate was also able to forge a strong relationship with the Prince, continuing: "I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days. I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her."

Going on to explain his choice of photograph for the post - it shows Philip sitting on a horse-drawn carriage with a young Prince George - William went on to express his gratitude for the relationships that Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis had the chance to develop with Prince Philip.

He said: "I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!"

William concluded his message by saying: "My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation. Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job."

Prince Philip passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle on 9 April. His funeral will take place at 3pm on Saturday, 17 April at St George's Chapel in Windsor.
