How Prince William Helped One Earthshot Prize Winner Put Seaweed Packaging in 50 Venues
When Prince William started the Earthshot Prize in 2021, he made it clear that winners would be supported to scale up their innovations on a long-term basis. And today, the ways in which that is happening have been highlighted as the Prince carried out a public engagement to celebrate one Earthshot winner securing a contract to provide their sustainable packaging to 50 sporting venues.
The Prince of Wales visited the Kia Oval Cricket Ground this afternoon to meet with 2022 Earthshot winners Notpla following their contract to supply an expected 75 million items of seaweed packaging over the next three years to sports and entertainment caterer Levy.
“The Prince played a pivotal role in supporting the relationship between Notpla and Levy UK + Ireland having spoken to representatives at Levy during a visit to Notpla’s London headquarters last year,” Kensington Palace said in a statement. And Notpla co-founder Pierre Paslier told T&C after the visit more about exactly how the Prince helped them get the deal over the line.
“When the prince decided to come and visit us, he actually asked 'bring in the room the people you want me to convince to accelerate faster and I’ll try my best to make sure that you get to the top list of priority for them',” Paslier said. “We brought in Levy…That meeting was incredible, it was basically saying 'hey how do we roll this out faster', and he was confronting our client, our potential client, to actually move faster. So that was really kind of him to take some of that time.”
Paslier said that the Prince, who is also president of the FA, was “very quick to draw the parallels of the opportunities between sport and sustainability.”
“Without the Earthshot Prize we would be nowhere near the scale that we are today,” he added.
William is continuing with his public engagements while Kate recovers from major abdominal surgery. Kensington Palace has said that she will not appear publicly until after Easter and she is understood to be focusing on her recovery and her family in the meantime. She has been photographed in the passenger seat of a car driven by her mother Carole in an image published in the US but not in the UK.
