Since his relationship with former actress Meghan Markle was revealed in 2016, Prince Harry has always appeared to be fiercely protective of the former actress.

Harry released an unprecedented statement at the time, stating Meghan had been subjected to “a wave of abuse and harassment” and that he was “worried about Ms. Markle’s safety.”

The Sun‘s former Royal Editor Duncan Larcombe told Yahoo UK’s The Royal Box that he thinks the reason Harry is so defensive of his now-wife is a consequence of Princess Diana’s death.

Larcombe says: “I’ve witnessed Harry having a few relationships over the years, before Meghan, he always has been very, very protective and defensive of a girlfriend and now obviously a wife, and soon a child.

“That will never change in Harry, I think it goes back to his frustration at not being able to have done more to protect his mother, so it’s quite natural.”

The late princess was killed in a tragic car accident in Paris in 1997 while being pursued by paparazzi. Harry was 12-years-old at the time.

Diana was one of the most photographed women in the world and her every move was followed, particularly after her separation from Prince Charles in 1992.

As a result, Harry has always had quite a complicated relationship with the press over the years, but Larcombe fears that his desire to shield Meghan could backfire.

He adds: “Whether that means Harry will become too protective of Meghan, too defensive, alienate himself from the press and possibly the public, it remains to be seen.”
