We all know that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry used to enjoy sharing updates via their public Instagram account, @SussexRoyal, and that Meghan had a popular personal account (and blog) before marrying into royalty. However, it's now been reported that Harry also had a secret account of his own too – and his username was pretty inventive...

This isn't the first time the prince has been known to dabble in social media either; a few years ago it was rumoured that he had a private Facebook profile under the alias 'Spike Wells', a nickname that Scotland Yard officers bestowed upon him, according to an extract of the new biography about Meghan and Harry, Finding Freedom, published by The Times.

As for his Instagram handle, the book alleges that Harry went by @SpikeyMau5 – a mix of both his nickname and a tribute to one of his favourite musical artists, Deadmau5. Eagle-eyed fans of the couple quickly noticed that Meghan followed this mysterious account not long after they began dating. It has since been deleted from the social media app though.

The book says: "Although she shared much of her London visit on social media, Meghan knew she had to keep her dates a secret, but the clues were there. Around the time of their first encounter, she began to follow a mysterious-looking Instagram account by the name of @SpikeyMau5. With no face visible in the profile photo, just a mouse-shaped helmet, it would have meant nothing to most people. But it was in fact Harry’s private account."

It also adds that Prince Harry used to have a cartoon character as his Facebook profile picture too. "A big house music fan, he crafted the pseudonym by using part of the name of one of his favourite DJs, Deadmau5. Spikey came from a Facebook alias that Harry used for an account he had under the name of Spike Wells. “Spike” was a nickname sometimes used for the prince, particularly by Scotland Yard officers.

"Harry’s Facebook account (before he shut it down) had a profile photo of three guys in panama hats taken from the back in an MGM Grand Las Vegas hotel suite. The account said he was from Maun, Botswana. Prior to that photo, Harry used the image of King Julien, the eccentric lemur from the Dreamworks movie Madagascar."

Can we start a petition to bring back Spikeymau5 please? Or perhaps now that Harry is no longer a senior working royal, he could collab with the DJ of his dreams by way of launching a new musical career? We'd give it a listen, that's for sure.
