Prince George's 'special role' at Duke Of Westminster's huge wedding as William also plays key part
Prince George could be teeing up to play a very special role in his godfather's wedding. On Friday, 7 June, the Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor, 33, will marry Olivia Henson, 31, in what has been dubbed 'the society event of the year'.
Prince William, a close friend of the Duke, has been confirmed as a definite Royal attendee at the wedding, having announced his attendance weeks in advance.
The Prince, 41, has had a lifelong connection with the Grosvenor family, having been mentored for many years by Hugh's father, Gerald, who passed away from a heart attack in 2016 at the age of 64. Gerald was one of King Charles' closest friends.
Reports suggest that the Prince of Wales will have a significant role in the wedding, serving as an usher as high society guests enter Chester Cathedral before the ceremony begins.
It's been suggested by friends that the Prince of Wales was first approached about this role in December, and there were even rumours at one point that he might be Hugh's best man.
When Prince William's eldest son, Prince George, was born in 2013, Hugh Grosvenor, affectionately known as 'Huey' among friends, was chosen as godfather.
Prince George is also expected to have a significant role in the wedding, where it's thought he'll be a page boy. When he was chosen as godfather to the future king in 2013, the Duke was the youngest of the seven godparents.
However, since the wedding is taking place on a Friday, the young prince, 10, will be expected to be studying at Lambrook School. However, one person who will not be attending the nuptials, despite their close friendship, is Prince Harry.
He reportedly decided against being at the society wedding of the year, recognising the potential complications his presence could bring about. Insiders revealed to PEOPLE magazine that after much contemplation, Prince Harry, 39, had a heart-to-heart with his good pal, the Duke of Westminster, where they both agreed it was best for Harry to skip the event.
With the well-known tension between Prince Harry and his brother Prince William, this move avoids any uncomfortable encounters that might have taken the spotlight away from the newlyweds.
The two have been mates since they were kids, and a source told PEOPLE that Harry's thoughts are full of "love and support and admiration" for the couple on their special day. Although he was on the guest list, Prince Harry acknowledged the complexities his attendance would entail. The choice to remain in California was reached as an "understanding between two friends".
