A new adaptation of Jane Austen's classic Pride and Prejudice could be in the works at Netflix, according to reports from Variety and Deadline.

The project is said to still be in the early stages of development, with Everything I Know About Love's Dolly Alderton reportedly behind the script.

Fans of the classic shouldn't get too excited just yet, however, as it may not make it to our screens – Netflix hasn't given the green light while casting has yet to be ironed out, say the reports.

Austen's 1813 classic is unquestionably one of the great works of English literature, and has been the subject of multiple television and film adaptations over the years, including the BBC's much-loved 1995 take, starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, famed for that notorious wet shirt scene.

More recently, Keira Knightley starred as heroine Elizabeth Bennet alongside Succession's Matthew Macfadyen as Mr Darcy, in the 2005 film by director Joe Wright.

If this new Pride and Prejudice adaptation does go ahead it won't be the first take on an Austen novel from Netflix – in 2022, it released its version of Persuasion, starring Dakota Johnson and Cosmo Jarvis as heroine Anne Elliot and her long-lost suitor Captain Frederick Wentworth.

The reports come shortly after the news that the BBC will soon be adapting popular novel The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow, which centres on the most unassuming (and usually overlooked) of Elizabeth's sisters, Mary, as she embarks on her own journey of self-discovery and romance.

While we wait for more news on the potential Pride and Prejudice Netflix adaptation, we may just have to re-read Austen's classic (for the 20th time)...
