President Trump says Melania's jacket message is about fake news after spokeswoman says there was no hidden message

On Thursday, Melania Trump faced criticism over her choice of outerwear after making an unannounced visit to the Texas border near Mexico.

Before boarding the plane to Texas, where she would visit Upbring New Hope, a detention centre for migrant children aged 12 to 17, the first lady was seen wearing a green military-style jacket with the words “I really don’t care. Do u?” written on the back.

People shared on Twitter how shocked they were at the jacket’s message and said they wondered why Melania wore the jacket at all, given the temperature and humidity in both D.C. and Texas, as well as the jacket’s insensitive message.

Critics assumed that she was making a statement about the immigrant children who were separated from their families. While visiting with the children, she did not wear the jacket.

Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s communications director, said that there was no “hidden message” and shared the hashtag “#ItsJustAJacket.”

Two hours later, however, President Trump tweeted his own explanation for his wife’s wardrobe choice, claiming that there was, in fact, a message, and it was directed toward “the fake news media.”

Does the jacket actually hold a hidden meaning? Was it a carefully planned assault on “the fake news media”? Or was it just the coat that was hanging by the door of the White House, and Melania knows that she gets chilled on planes?

Both supporters and critics were quick to comment on Trump’s tweet.
