Our prayers have been answered! Motherland is back… kind of
Remember Amanda, the uptight, self-absorbed alpha mum from Sharon Horgan’s so-brilliant-it-hurts comedy Motherland? Silly question; of course you do. Well, we have some exceptionally good news because she’s back to fill the Motherland-shaped hole in our lives – only this time, it really is all about her.
A new six-part spin-off fittingly titled Amandaland is on the way and Amanda (played by Lucy Punch) is assuming the limelight that, let’s face it, she’s always felt she deserved. Focused entirely on her character (well, almost), we meet her again post-divorce are her circumstances are less than ideal. She's been forced to leave her posh life behind and downsize to South Harlesden or, as the Estate Agent calls it, ‘SoHa’. Another stroke of brilliance from Sharon Horgan? We think so.
Oh, and did we mention that Amanda’s gloriously brutal mother Felicity, played by the one and only Joanna Lumley, is returning, too? Yep, our prayers have been answered. Here’s everything else we know about the upcoming series…
What will happen in Amandaland?
The new series will follow Amanda as she struggles to adjust to her nice life in South Harlesden. With her teenage kids Manus and Georgie now at secondary school, Amanda faces a new set of parenting challenges: teenage drinking, fake Instagram accounts and eco anxiety, to name a few.
Naturally, Amanda’s mother Felicity (Joanna Lumley) is never far from her side; in fact, she’s constantly hanging around. She’s also in complete and utter denial that she’s lonely. Cue more backhanded compliments and plenty of veiled snipes about her daughter's new home.
Thank goodness then, for Anne (Philippa Dunne); yes, the Anne. She’s back, too. After a brief spell of freedom, she’s sucked back into being Amanda’s minion to help her navigate the social scene with the other parents at the children’s new school. And if anyone can help, it’s Anne.
Creator Sharon Horgan has said of the series: “I was genuinely sad having to say goodbye to Motherland. There’s such a fondness for that show and those characters. So it was a real thrill to get to pick up the further adventures of Amanda and Anne, not to mention Felicity.
“Lucy, Philippa and Joanna are top of their game in these roles and are joined by an incredibly funny and talented new cast. Can’t wait to showcase the next challenges of parenthood and the very particular kind of friendship the school gates bring.”
Who’s in the cast of Amandaland?
Leads Lucy Punch, Joanna Lumley and Philippa Dunne will be joined by the following cast members:
Samuel Anderson (Gavin & Stacey) as Mal
Siobhan McSweeney (Derry Girls) as Della
Rochenda Sandall (Line Of Duty) as Fi
Ekow Quartey (Trying) as JJ
