Pizza Hut and Domino’s have been rivals in the pizza world for years. Now they’re squaring off in an unexpected arena: bottled wine
Domino’s Pizza and Yellow Tail wine are collaborating on a limited-edition red blend that pairs with pizza orders. The announcement comes two months after Pizza Hut introduced a tomato wine to its customers.
Wine and pizza go together, so, upon reflection, it makes sense that Domino’s is dangling its feet into the wine business.
The chain has partnered with Australia’s Yellow Tail to introduce a limited-edition Yellow Tail & Domino’s Red Blend wine. The 1.5-liter bottle is on sale now nationwide at select wine retailers.
The wine, described as balanced with fruit-forward flavors that pair best with a Domino's pizza, is the latest in an odd escalation of the pizza wars. Domino’s gets into the wine business two months after Pizza Hut offered its own vintage—although that one was far less traditional.
Pizza Hut, in November, rolled out Tomato Wine by Pizza Hut, a limited-edition offering made not from grapes, but…yes…from tomatoes, which were infused with natural basil. (That promotion has ended and your only chances of finding the chain’s Tomato Wine today is via a back-channel reseller.)
To promote the wine, Domino’s will launch a separate promotion on Feb. 3 called Twist.Tap.Order caps. Available via ReserveBar in Florida, Washington, D.C., Nebraska, Wyoming, and Oregon, people who buy the wine will be able to twist off the cap and tap it to their phone to order a Domino’s pizza, via the company’s app. Note that the cost of the pizza is not included in the wine, even with the special caps.
Should you finish the bottle before the pizza arrives, you’re on your own.
