It’s a classic new baby shot. A picture of a parent’s hand holding their newborn’s to highlight their teeny, tiny fingers and their teeny, tiny nails.
But the Internet up in arms by a similar picture that has been shared because instead of cute, short nails, the baby in the image seems to have long, claw-like talons. Yikes.
It’s worth mentioning that the origin of the image, posted on Instagram by @daily_earthpix, isn’t known. Nor is it clear if it is a genuine photo.
But that hasn’t stopped people going online to express their anger about the length of the newborn’s nails with many calling the parents out for not cutting them.
“This is gross cut your child’s fingernails that baby is gonna hurt themselves,” one user wrote.
“Definitely not safe for a baby to have fingernails like that,” added another.
“Creepy & not safe for the baby,” a further user commented.
However, some users stepped in to defend the parents and explain that some babies can have really long talons from birth.
“Reminds me of my fourth son when he was born,” one parent shared.
“The baby came out of the womb like that! Stupidity is too much here,” explained another.
According to the NHS some babies are born with long nails. They recommend cutting them in case they scratch themselves.
“You can buy special baby nail clippers or small, round-ended safety scissors. If you find the idea of cutting your baby’s nails too nerve-racking, you could try filing them down with a fine emery board instead,” the site recommends.
