A large majority of us probably start our day with a roasting hot cup of coffee. Whether it's a latte, espresso or flat white, coffee is one of the most loved drinks in the UK, and is a great way to wake yourself up in the morning.

But a neuroscientist has recently urged people to stop doing one vital thing when they have their morning cuppa.

Robert Love told people to always drink water before coffee in a recent TikTok video, saying that it's thought to have a big impact on brain health. He claimed if you start your day with coffee without drinking water beforehand, it may actually cause you some issues.

The scientist explained that we may want to rethink the way we consume caffeine in the morning, reports Surrey Live.

Robert said: "Dr Bruce, the sleep doctor, says hydrate before you caffeinate. The reason is we are most dehydrated when we first wake up in the morning. We're actually dispelling air through our mouth as we breathe, and even our nose as well.

"And so you want to make sure you drink water before you drink coffee. By the way, drinking coffee on an empty stomach can increase acidity in your stomach, it can harm your stomach, it doesn't feel as good.

"Instead, wait 90 minutes after waking up to have your first coffee. Make sure you drink water then - that'll be really good. Bonus - get outside in the sunshine when you first wake up - your brain is going to love that.

"That sunshine not only feels good but also tells your brain it's morning. It improves your energy, mood and brain performance for the day."

It is indeed recommended that you drink water in the morning before your first cup of coffee. Drinking water first can help with hydration, digestion and metabolism.

Your body needs help to rehydrate after sleeping, as dehydration can make your body work less efficiently. Drinking water can also help to give your digestive system a boost.

It'll ensure your metabolism is working as it should be, and can help you avoid experiencing a "caffeine crash", which can make you feel more tired in the long-run.

Eating fibre and having some exercise can also boost your health during the morning.
