The 'pearl' of a hidden gem that every Italy-lover should visit

Varenna: a Lake Como idyll you need to discoverLepretre Pierre

There's a chance you've never heard of Varenna, Lake Como, but it just so happens to be one of the most charming spots in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. Just across the water from fashionable Bellagio, on the eastern shore of Italy's famously majestic lake, this historic fishing village has a population of less than 1,000.

But the small size of Varenna belies its seemingly endless allure. In fact, being occasionally overlooked actually works in its favour; it feels like a truly undiscovered gem and those who do travel here are rewarded with authentic, picturesque Lake Como charm away from the madding crowds, especially in off-peak months. Because, while famous Italian hotspots like Tuscany and Sorrento are enduringly popular, there's something to be said for straying a little off the beaten track.

Varenna is the perfect place in which to do this. It's regarded as one of the most beautiful towns in the region and often referred to as the 'pearl of Lake Como'. You can discover everything it has to offer if you visit Varenna as part of Good Housekeeping's Discover Lake Como, St Moritz & Bernina Railway escorted tour.

On this exclusive trip, you'll get to stay on the shores of Lake Como in the pretty nearby town of Colico, with a seven-night stay in a charming lakeside hotel. One of the highlights of the tour (alongside visiting the timelessly glamorous town of St Moritz in neighbouring Switzerland via the Bernina Express) is visiting Varenna on a coach excursion. With everything organised, you won't need to lift a finger – simply hop on the bus and get ready to fall for this hidden gem of a town.

After arriving in Varenna, you might want to make a bee-line for one of its most magical sights: Villa Monastero. Located on the shore of Lake Como just outside the main town, this 12th-century Cistercian convent is accessible by foot from the harbour, with a scenic rout that winds down lovely narrow cobbled lanes and passes other historic sights.

Villa Monastero has undergone various restoration works to make it what it is today, and is surrounded by arrestingly beautiful botanical gardens. Nearby Villa Cipressi is also well worth a visit, surrounded by more wonderful gardens to complete your horticultural tour.

While in Varenna, you might want to take a dip in the magnificent lake – with the cool waters especially appealing in the warmer months. Those in the know head for the small public beach in front of the Hotel Royal Victoria, but there are plenty of other spots to swim from, too.

If you prefer milder climes – and even fewer fellow tourists – you might want to consider visiting Varenna outside of the high season (mid-June to August). There's plenty of year-round appeal here and with Good Housekeeping's tour departing in December, you can experience the magic of the festive season by the lake. The centre is festooned with lights and a small nativity scene, while shops remain open with wonderful gifts to browse.

There are also lots of cafes in which to enjoy a morning espresso or an afternoon apéritif, as well as restaurants run by talented locals to give a truly authentic taste of the region. One such spot is Il Cavatappi, a small restaurant with only six tables inside and a few more outside. Here, they cure their own salumi and handmake five different types of pasta – buon appetito!

History buffs won't want to miss the Castle of Vezio, a medieval fortress that has stood for more than 1,000 years overlooking Varenna. It's worth making the journey up here for the views of Lake Como alone, as well as the permanent exhibition dedicated to the legend of an extinct marine reptile called the Lariosaurus (you might think of it as the Loch Ness monster of Lake Como).

However you spend your time here, you'll almost certainly want to return to Varenna, Lake Como's shining pearl...

Good Housekeeping's exclusive tour of Lake Como with a ride on the Bernina Express departs in September and December 2024.
