Paul Mescal and Phoebe Bridgers are one of our new favourite celeb couples. The Normal People actor and singer were first reported to be dating in 2020 and, over a year later, they finally made things public, before going red carpet and Instagram official.

Despite hailing from Ireland and Los Angeles respectively, these two have actually wound up making a perfect match. We love it when an unexpected pairing comes together. Here's what we know about their relationship so far, starting with the most recent update...

21 December 2022 - Paul and Phoebe are hit by split rumours

Say it ain't so! Despite last month's engagement reports, speculation that Paul and Phoebe have actually split is now rife. Although details about what actually happened seem to be sparse, outlets included Jezebel are now saying she's been spotted with comedian Bo Burnham.

The 15th December episode of the Deux U podcast claims onlookers have seen Burnham and Bridgers "making out" and "canoodling" recently, while they also attended a play at the Connelly Theater in New York, where he was giving her his "undivided attention."

The pair were also photographed at The 1975's gig together, in a picture which saw Phoebe kissing frontman Matty Healy.

If the rumours are true, this would not only mark the end of Phoebe and Paul's romance, but Bo Burnham's decade-long relationship with director Lorene Scafaria. So far, none of the involved parties have commented on the rumours, so they could easily just be that: rumours.

We have reached out to reps for comment.

Here's the rest of Paul and Phoebe's relationship timeline:

12 May 2020: Paul and Phoebe share a Twitter exchange

Phoebe and Paul were first linked in a very 2020 fashion: on Twitter. Revealing that she'd completed Normal People, which sees Paul playing lead character Connell, Phoebe tweeted, "finished Normal People and now I’m sad and horny oh wait".

Responding just as we'd expect, Paul tweeted back, "I'm officially dead." with Phoebe then replying, "Nooo don’t die you're so talented aha".

Erm, we're not quite sure what was going on here, but it seems like these two might have known each other prior to their exchange, if their shared humour is anything to go by.

21 May 2020: The pair host an Instagram Live together

While it's not known whether Paul and Phoebe had met in real life at this stage, they did hang out virtually, hosting an Instagram Live together for Wonderland magazine.

At one point, Paul told Phoebe, "I think it's well documented that I love your music," with the singer replying, "Well, that makes me blush."

Stop it, you guys! Reports also claimed that the pair then stayed online afterwards having drinks together, according to The Mirror.

12 June 2020: Phoebe calls Paul a "cute boy" in an interview and says he followed her on Instagram

Following the pair's Twitter and IG exchanges, 27-year-old Phoebe was quick to gush about the Normal People actor in a subsequent interview with NME, calling him “the cute boy” from the show.

Discussing the moment she realised Paul followed her on Instagram, she said, "I got a little pitter-patter in my heart when I saw".

Aw, cute

July 2020: Phoebe flies to Ireland to see Paul amid reports that the pair are dating

Heading across the Atlantic for an IRL meet-up, Phoebe is thought to have flown to Ireland from LA to see Paul, with reports claiming that the pair are dating.

While no photo receipts emerged, it appears the duo met for brunch in a cafe in Kinsale, Ireland - with the venue themselves tweeting that the pair had stopped by.

"Fan-Tas-Tic day thanks to @mescal_paul and @phoebe_bridgers for calling to our café this morning for breakfast," the Lemon Tree cafe wrote. "Such amazing talented young people #Celebrities #musicaltalent #Staycation2020 #breakfast #voiceofageneration".

28 November 2020: Paul speaks about a mystery "girlfriend"

Paul discusses his unnamed "girlfriend" in an interview with GQ. While it's not known whether Paul was indeed talking about Phoebe here, it certainly seems like he was smitten by someone.

The article references Paul's girlfriend, whom the actor calls “a lifesaver". He added, "To have someone to lean on through such a mad, mad time has been invaluable. Really, I don’t know where I’d be without her.”

1 December 2020: Paul appears in Phoebe's music video

Collaborating once again, Paul appeared in the music video for Phoebe's song 'Savior Complex' alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge and, honestly, it's the crossover of dreams.

What do you reckon we'll see them collab on next?

6 November 2021: Paul and Phoebe make their red carpet debut

While they've kept their relationship pretty under wraps until now, Paul and Phoebe appeared to make things properly official on Saturday [6 November], posing on the red carpet together for the first time.

Although the pair haven't publicly spoken out confirming their relationship, they did look very cosy in pictures as a duo, standing with their arms around one another and laughing together. How cute do these two look?

Paul and Phoebe were walking the red carpet together at the 2021 LACMA Art + Film Gala presented by Gucci, also hanging out with Paul's The Lost Daughter co-star Dakota Johnson and director Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Meanwhile, Phoebe later tweeted, "Paul thinks thousand island is called hundred years sauce," presumably in reference to the American salad dressing, and we can only imagine it's Paul Mescal that she's talking about. So, yeah, gives you an idea of the conversation topic of the night, I guess. Super glamorous, obviously.

These two!

11 December 2021: Paul and Phoebe go Instagram official

These two are finally Insta official! Following some stunning red carpet couple pics last month (see below for those), Paul and Phoebe have taken the next step in their relationship: posting a social media selfie together.

Phoebe took to Instagram to share the cute snap, smiling with Paul in a selfie by the sea while he adorably rests his chin on her cheek. The singer didn't add a caption or tag the Normal People star (due to the fact that he doesn't have a public Instagram account), but it's true that a picture speaks a thousand words, and these two look SO happy together.

Keep the cute moments coming, please guys.

15 February 2022

Having gone Insta-official back in December 2021, Phoebe and Paul treated us to yet another look into their typically private relationship. The pair, who got together back in 2020, shared an intimate snap of them cuddled up in bed together, looking as cute as ever.

Obviously, it's classically Phaul cute, but the real shout out has to go to the woman in the background just trying to read her book.

29 April 2022

Fans think Paul and Phoebe are engaged (!) after a source told The Sun the singer was introducing the actor as her "fiancé" over Coachella weekend. "Phoebe is said to have been calling Paul her fiancé as they mingled with fellow guests in California," their report claims.

Love these two together.

2 May 2022: Paul and Phoebe attend the Met Gala together just days after she reportedly introduced him to friends as her "fiancé." And guess what? He was wearing a ring on his engagement finger. Does this mean Phoebe proposed, and Paul said yes?! Eek.

6 November 2022: More proof that Paul and Phoebe are reportedly engaged! In an interview with Normal People actor Paul in The Guardian, the journalist casually mentions that the two met on Twitter and "are now engaged."

Although since being published, the piece has been amended to instead read "the pair are reported to be engaged", so perhaps it's not the confirmation fans are actually after. Can someone just give us some receipts now?
