It’s official – Paul Mescal is an Academy Award nominee. After much discussion over the past few weeks, the Irish-born actor, who many of us fell head over heels in love with during his breakout role in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People, has followed up his BAFTA nomination with his very first Oscar nom for father-daughter indie drama, Aftersun.

And his singer-songwriter sister, Nell, has taken to social media to excitedly share a snap that she took of her whole family during a FaceTime call.

On the video call we see Nell, along with her brother Paul, dad Paul, mum Dearbhla and older brother Donncha, in various states of shock and awe.

Nell can be seen with her hands over her mouth, inexplicably unable to process the incredible news, while the rest of the Mescal clan are all smiles.

'IM SOBBING,' she wrote in a separate tweet, following the momentous news.

And the reason she hasn’t shared a video of their reaction: 'i would post the video of my reaction but those tears were UGLY'

Let’s just say, we want to be a part of the Mescal family group chat:

His sister also took to Instagram, where she showed a throwback of her and her two brothers jumping on a trampoline:

Paul has since reacted to the news in a statement (via the Independent), saying:

'This is truly a special moment for everyone involved in Aftersun. To be recognised by the Academy is such an insane honour and I’m so utterly grateful. I want to dedicate this nomination to my two friends Charlotte [Wells, director] and Frankie [Corio, co-star] who I love dearly! This is bananas, thank you!'

He joins fellow Irish actor Colin Farrell, who stars in the hotly tipped The Banshees of Inisherin, as well as The Whale’s Brendan Fraser, Austin Butler, following his star turn in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and Bill Nighy from Living, in the Best Actor category.

You can catch the actor, in his leading role as Calum in Aftersun, on MUBI. We’ll certainly be cheering you on, Paul!

The 95th Academy Awards will be held on March 12 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, with UK viewers being able to watch from midnight that night.
