Patrick J. Adams Thought He'd Closed the 'History Book' on “Suits” Before Show's 'Strange' Second Swell (Exclusive)

Adams reunited with his former 'Suits' costars, Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty and Gina Torres at the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday

Patrick J. Adams never imagined he'd find his way back to Zane Specter Litt after closing the chapter on Suits.

In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE on the 2024 Golden Globes red carpet Sunday, the Suits alum, 42 reflected on the legal drama's recent resurgence on Netflix and opened p about the show's shocking comeback.

"I mean, when you say goodbye to a show and you walk away and it ends and you had your moment, you think that's it," he explained. "It's going to be over and nothing else is going to happen. And you get to just go to the history book."

Adams said to have such a "second swell" has been "really, really strange."

"It happened. And then it was one week and then it was two weeks and five weeks, and it kept going. And I think we had a twelve-week run at number one," he recalled. "It's just crazy. So we feel very grateful. And I think there's something about the show that clearly continues to speak to people."

Suits, which ran for nine seasons from 2011 to 2019, starred Adams, Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty, Rick Hoffman and Meghan Markle.

In July 2023, Nielsen reported that the drama, which originally aired on the USA Network, set a new record as the most-viewed acquired streaming title nearly four years after its series finale after racking up 3 billion viewing minutes within its first week on Netflix.

At Sunday's Golden Globes, Adams, Macht, Rafferty and Gina Torres reunited as they presented the cast of Succession with the award for best drama series.

Markle, who departed the show after season 7 following her engagement to Prince Harry, shared her delight at the show’s renaissance in November. When asked by Variety what she thinks is behind the “renewed love” for the show, the Duchess of Sussex said, “I have no idea. It was great to work on, such a great cast and crew. We had a really fun time. I was on it for seven seasons, so quite a bit.”

“But it’s hard to find a show you can binge-watch that many episodes of these days, so that could have something to do with it,” she added. “But good shows are everlasting.”

The first eight seasons of Suits are available to stream on Netflix; the ninth and final season is on Peacock.
