Paper Christmas decorations that will bring you joy year after year
Reusable and recyclable, paper Christmas decorations can look every bit as luxe as the traditional ornaments we've come to love over the years, plus they're a space-saving option, as most designs can be folded away when not in use.
A continuing trend for 2024, paper decorations are more sculptural, decorative (pleats and folds or looped and draping chains), and bigger this year, with Garden Trading even launching a supersized 6ft paper tree.
'Available in a vast array of beautiful colours, paper Christmas decorations are a versatile choice that sit beautifully in both traditional and more contemporary festive decor,' explains Guy Daltry, head of product at Garden Trading. 'Paper garlands, pop-up trees, baubles and decorative stars can be used to transform your home into a festive fairytale-land, and are also a great choice for those trying to step away from plastic and choose a much more sustainable option.
'They’re also a convenient option for those who go all out at Christmas and then struggle to store their decor for the rest of the year. Foldable and lightweight, you could probably fit a whole grotto’s worth of paper decorations in one box.'
Smaller, ready-made paper trees are still a hit and ideal for styling mantelpieces, coffee and side tables, and even dining tables for a festive tablescape. 'Readymade paper trees have become a popular choice for their simplicity, affordability, and eco-friendliness, offering a modern twist on traditional holiday styling,' says Heather Robbins, Hobbycraft’s trading director.
Where to use paper Christmas decorations
You can hang paper decorations on trees and put them in windows, or, if you have a paper Christmas garland, hang it along your mantelpiece or across your wall. 'I adore creating a "wow factor" moment in our hallway with large paper decorations, which I hang from the staircase and mirrors. They help in setting the tone when welcoming guests, elevating the festive spirit,' says Suzy Humphreys, founder of Layered Lounge.
Interior designer and House Beautiful columnist, Sophie Robinson, says her colourful paper honeycomb balls are one of her favourite decorations to use at Christmas. 'I've had these for years and what I love is that they bring all the colour, all the impact, that's what you want for a maximalist Christmas. I have them piled up on side tables, I might have them hanging down the bannister in the hallway, or a great idea is to add a huge bundle of them under the tree because the tree always looks so empty at Christmas until the presents start arriving.'
