Top Gear and Take Me Out star Paddy McGuinness has returned to his comedy roots, embarking on his first live tour for eight years. His first night of the Nearly There tour was on Thursday 24 October, and it took the comic just one minute before he made a joke at the expense of his ex-wife Christine. Speaking from the stage at Blackburn’s King George’s Hall, Paddy said: “It’s all about love and respect tonight. Loads of love in this room. I don’t care what race you are, what religion, what your sexuality is,” he said. “I don’t care how you identify. You can identify as a cat, for all I care. Put your litter tray in the corner, knock yourself out.”

He continued: “Tonight, folks, we’re all here as human beings with one common goal — and that’s to help me pay for my divorce. I’ve had the pants down, me, the pants down.” He added: “I’m thinking of getting Children In Need to do a bike ride for me next year, or come round to a bedsit in Bolton filming me.”

Christine wasn’t the only person Paddy had a dig at – his routine also took swipes at celebrities including former newsreader Huw Edwards, Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, Prince Andrew (“He never breaks a sweat, does he?”), Cast Away’s Phillip Schofield and Simon Cowell, who he described as having “a face like a melted Caramac.”

While Paddy and Christine split in 2022 after 11 years of marriage, the exes still share the same house in Cheshire, where they raise their three children, twins Leo and Penelope, who are 10, and seven year old Felicity. When Paddy announced his stand up tour earlier this year, he did reveal that he would delve into personal matters on stage, including his and Christine’s break up and the challenges of parenting their three autistic children.

Chatting with Tony Bellew on his Club Bellew podcast, Paddy revealed: "This tour will be slightly different from past tours. I'm planning to talk about things I have never talked about on tour, for instance having children with autism.”

"I'm divorced now, so that will come into it. It's been eight years since my last tour and there's lots of things to laugh about. I'm looking forward to getting back in front of a live audience, along with running the gauntlet of cancel culture, click bait and fake news."
