Owala Just Upgraded Its FreeSip Collection with Customer-Demanded Features

Move over Stanley—there’s a new tumbler in town! TikTok-beloved water bottle brand Owala has just debuted its latest tumbler silhouette, and we have to say: It’s a step above from a functionality stance.
On Monday, January 27—following the brand’s biggest in-person launch event, A Thirst of Its Kind in San Antonio, Texas—Owala expanded its cult-favorite FreeSip collection with two new bottles, the Owala FreeSip Tumbler ($44.99) and Owala FreeSip Sway ($34.99+), both of which are sold in eight earthy colorblock hues.
FreeSip® Tumbler
For those that aren’t in the know: Owala’s FreeSip design features a dual-sip spout beneath a secure push-to-open lid that lets users sip through a straw or tilt and chug with ease. While it might not seem like the most exciting feature, folks on social media and online as a whole have awarded it the highest praise—to the extent that the OG FreeSip has amassed nearly 20,000 5-star reviews on the brand’s website, and thousands more on Amazon, Target, Dick’s, and Urban Outfitters. What’s more, it’s been dubbed the #1 Amazon Best Seller in Kitchen & Dining, with over 10,000 purchased in the past month. So, when word got out that the brand was combining the spout with a trendy tumbler design, it’s no wonder fans started bouncing off the walls.
“Immediately yes,” one fan commented on one of the reveal posts. “I have been DREAMING of this,” someone else wrote. “I hate having [an] exposed straw so I am thrilled to finally get the upgraded free sip tumbler,” another shopper commented. “A FREE SIP TUMBLER WITH A HANDLE. YALL,” an excited Instagrammer exclaimed.
And, as lucky recipients of the Owala FreeSip Tumbler and Owala FreeSip Sway ahead of launch, we have to say: These new SKUs live up to the hype.
Let’s start with the Tumbler. First things first, to the fans questioning the FreeSip Tumbler release given Owala already has a Tumbler: This one’s different. Where the brand’s original Tumbler features an exposed straw, this 40-ounce one showcases a 2-in-1 spout tucked beneath a protective lid. Additionally, where the original Tumbler has a wider, angled vessel design, the new FreeSip Tumbler is tall and tapered. While those features largely boil down to aesthetics and sipping preference, there’s one design element that anyone and everyone can appreciate: The Owala FreeSip Tumbler is leak-proof thanks to a lockable, push-to-open lid. So, if you’ve been looking for a tumbler you can toss in your bag with abandon, the FreeSip Tumbler is here to make your dreams come true.
FreeSip® Sway®
The Owala FreeSip Sway is a nice addition to the brand’s offering, as well. Available in 30 and 40 oz., the sleek tapered bottle features the iconic 2-in-1 spout paired with a thick hinged handle for easy carrying. While some Instagram users question the necessity of the launch, given the original FreeSip bottle has a small pop-up handle, we find that the thicker, roomier handle is more comfortable to carry. For what it’s worth, it also feels more secure for clipping to a pack if you’re an avid outdoor adventurer.
All in all, we think it’s safe to say that Owala has done it again. The only thing we’d change is the color offering. The brand tends to stick to muted, earthier hues with vibrant colors reserved for limited edition launches and small pops on larger designs (like a magenta straw, for example). We’re crossing our fingers for a palette expansion featuring some of the brand’s recent color drops, like Firefly (a neon yellow and cream combo) and Can You See Me? (a hot pink and red combo). In the meantime, we’ll happily sip and chug out of these functional new vessels.
