What does the Oura Ring do?
The Oura ring is a fitness tracker with a difference – that difference being this smart ring is a tracker you genuinely forget you're wearing. While running watches like a Garmin or the Apple Watch Ultra do fitness tracking brilliantly, the Oura Ring is accurate at measuring sleep and extremely comfortable to wear all day and night.
It features a suite of sensors that can track heart rate (both resting and during a workout), body temperature and even SpO2 – the percentage of oxygen in your blood, which can flag illnesses.
It pairs with a smartphone app via Bluetooth and provides detailed health insights, including sleeping advice and a ‘readiness score’ for exercise – flagging when it might be better to have a rest day rather than embark on a fartlek session. It's also compatible with Apple Health and Google Fit, meaning it should fit seamlessly into your current setup.
No screen also means a long battery life – the ring only needs to be recharged around every five days or so, and it's pretty quick to recharge too.
Is the Oura Ring worth it?
While running watches might give you more detailed feedback for runs, after thoroughly testing the Oura Ring for over a year, we can say with certainty that this is one of the best fitness trackers out there. The sleep tracking is helpful without being intrusive, the period prediction is almost unnervingly accurate, and the advice on the app is useful and intuitive without ever veering into prescriptiveness. It's also extremely robust.
