Our favourite desserts are about to get a whole lot smaller

We’ve all been there - you’re out for a delicious meal and too full to finish the last bite of your main but before you know it, you’ve caved in, and a huge warm chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream is in front of you.

Better luck next time, eh?

Actually, there might not be a next time, because thanks to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt - already the UK’s most popular man - we’ll soon see our favourite restaurant desserts shrink.

As part of the government’s plans to tackle obesity, restaurants will be required to make their dessert portion sizes smaller.

According to The Times, Hunt told more than 100 food companies at a private meeting that they’re going to have to “step up and deliver on sugar reduction”:

“Going out to eat is no longer a treat,” he said.

“It’s a regular habit for many families and is contributing significantly to the extra calories and sugar that we all consume on a daily basis.

“We can’t ignore the changing habits of consumers. This means we expect the whole of the out-of-home sector - coffee shops, pubs and family restaurants, quick service restaurants, takeaways, cafes, contract caterers and mass catering suppliers - to step up and deliver on sugar reduction.”

So restaurants have three options: Reduce the amount of sugar in their foods, make the desserts smaller, or persuade customers to make healthier choices.

Otherwise, they’ll be named and shamed.

Food chains under fire include Pizza Express, Starbucks, McDonald’s and Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

It’s all for a good cause, of course - our health - but we can’t help but mourn the gigantic banoffee pies that could have been.
