Only Murders In The Building has officially been renewed for season 5
Don't be spooked by Only Murders in the Building taking a West Coast sojourn in season 4, because the podcasters won't be separated from their building, or murder, for long. The question is, will Only Murders renewed for season 5, or is this it? Here's what we know.
When Only Murders in the Building premiered in 2021, a slightly claustrophobic murder mystery that made us laugh was the perfect thing. After everything we'd all been through in 2020 without really going anywhere, you didn't need to live in an Upper West Side apartment complex to relate to characters who get a little too involved in their neighbour's business.
Since that explosive first season, the momentum has never faltered. I'm honestly still humming "which of the Pickwick Triplets did it" from the musical third season. It feels lofty to even dream about a show running for more than four seasons these days. So why do I feel kind of hopeful about this one?
Well, *is* Only Murders in the Building coming back for season 5?
Yes! The show is officially getting a fifth season. Only Murders feels like one of the only sure things in show business these days. Given pandemic precautions and the WGA and SAG strikes, it's kind of miraculous that this show has come out consistently with a new season every summer since 2021, and that weekly episode drops mean that we're talking about the show and trying to solve the mystery for months. We can only hope that this keeps going into 2025.
What would season 5 be about?
I think we've figured out by now is that the premise is in the title. It would be about a murder in the building. Typically, the show sets up the next murder in a cliff-hanger moment at the end of the previous season's finale. So we'll have a better idea about what a possible season 5 will be about when we get to the end of season 4.
The fact that the Only Murders calls its shot like that does also make me think (or at least hope) that if season 4 was the final season we would already know. With such carefully planned out finales, surely they'll know in advance when the end is the end. You know??
Only Murders in the Building season 5 cast
Unless one of the core three actually gets murdered (can you imagine?) I think we can expect Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short to return. I also think that, since she's returning for season 4, Meryl Streep might stick around.
When would Only Murders in the Building come out?
Like I said before, this feels like one of the only popular shows that doesn't take two years to put out a new season these days. (Other exceptions include television franchises like Law & Order or NCIS, as well as Abbott Elementary, The Bear and until recently 9-11.) There's little reason to believe that, provided the show does return for season 5, it wouldn't premiere next year. Seasons 1, 3, and 4 all premiered in August. Season 2 premiered in June. So it's a safe bet that a hypothetical Only Murders in the Building Season 5 comes back in August 2025 if not before.
