The one storecupboard ingredient our food team can’t live without
It's safe to say that our cookery team here at Good Housekeeping spend most of their waking hours thinking about food and developing delicious recipes, but in a recent discussion about what their 'desert island food' or store cupboard essential would be (if they could only pick one), everyone answered with the exact same thing: Tabasco Jalapeno Hot Sauce.
We weren't expecting this simple product to be the top choice, especially as it's not as common as its more popular variant, but the cookery team assured us this product is so underrated and overlooked, and deserves more time in the spotlight.
Green Jalapeno Pepper Sauce, 150ml
"My desert island food staple is hands down the green Tabasco sauce. It's salty and zingy, and works well with almost anything, but especially this hash brown baked eggs recipe" says Senior Cookery Writer, Grace.
Senior Food & Drinks Writer, Mel says that the green Tabasco is "SO underrated. There's so much love for the regular hot sauce but the green is where it's at. I love adding a splash onto a cream cheese and smoked salmon bagel, but my guilty pleasure is adding a few dashes into this chilli cornbread pie 🤤."
Our Cookery Editor, Emma says that "the green is definitely superior and it's got actual flavour rather than just the burning heat. It's fresh and zingy with a lovely herbal edge to it, as well as adding a juicy kick to anything you shake it over. It's my go-to for adding spice to bloody Mary's and I absolutely love it on simple scrambled eggs, but it's particularly delicious when splashed in our breakfast burrito, too".
Our Senior Cookery Writer, Alice has a bit of an unconventional way of using her Tabasco jalapeno sauce, but we won't knock it until we've tried it.
"I'll take the Tabasco green chilli hot sauce over the regular variety any day. I love its peppery, herby taste and a recent combination I've been doing is sprinkling it onto sourdough toast, topped with peanut butter, cherry tomatoes and feta!"
Ok now we are officially sold on this Tabasco jalapeno hot sauce. It sounds like the underdog we've all needed in our cooking to spice things up and add liveliness to our next meal.
