THE PROPERTY: An architectural masterpiece, designed by Robert Adam in 1789 and constructed out of the stones taken from Seton Palace, the castle is said to have been the favourite residence of Mary, Queen of Scots. Preserved in its original glory by the Wemyss family – the owners since the late 18th century until 2003 – Seton Castle has recently undergone an incredibly thorough restoration project, both inside and out, including a renovation of the ceilings and a fortification of the turrets. The 13 acres of grounds, comprising formal lawns, wildflower meadows, parkland and a 15th-century carriage bridge, more than match the scale and grandeur of the home.

THE LOCATION: Situated in the lush East Lothian countryside, some 10 miles from Edinburgh, the estate strikes the perfect balance between easy accessibility from the Scottish capital and rural tranquillity, and is also within walking distance of the sandy coastline. Additionally, a short drive will bring you to several of the world’s best golf courses.

THE INTERIOR: Each room is breathtaking in its own right, from the stately entrance hall with Corinthian pillars and a cantilevered staircase, to the sumptuous silk-draped dining-room with spectacular views over the Firth of Forth, and up to the charming library. The array of damasks, tweeds and silks used in the décor, by designers such as Ralph Lauren, Mulberry and Christian Lacroix, create a luxurious and cosy atmosphere. The castle also boasts a state-of-the-art gym, two self-contained apartments in the west wing (ideal for guest or staff accommodation) and a private helicopter pad.
