It's official: The humble argyle jumper is back on the fashion agenda
If our Instagram feed is anything to go by this season, there's no denying that the argyle jumper is officially back on the fashion agenda. A favourite with fashion editors and creators alike, you'd be forgiven for being a little skeptical. But, trust us, this season's argyle knits are less grandpa, more high-fashion.

The instantly recognisable design was originally derived from the tartan of Clan Campbell of Argyll in western Scotland. Its distinctive diamond motif may be reminiscent of your grandfather's knitwear, but the humble argyle jumper has had a high-fashion rebrand - and we're here for it.
The trend has been bubbling away for some time now. First seen on the autumn/winter 2022 runways, it has only gained momentum ever since and was most recently spotted on the runway of Christian Dior resort 2025. It's no surprise that high street brands are finally embracing its return, in the form of cosy sweaters, chic cardigans, and knitted polos. Red's Editor-in-chief Sarah Tomczak is also a fan, having recently added an argyle Zara gem to her wardrobe.
"Red's Fashion Director Oonagh spotted this Zara cardigan for me," Sarah says. "I love the colours and the boxy shape. I’ll wear it solo but also with a tee or poloneck underneath. I even like the idea of it in the summer with a pair of white shorts to make it feel a bit collegiate."

What makes the humble argyle a true wardrobe hero is all down to its versatility. Cosy and chic, take styling tips from Sarah and pair your cardi with wide-leg jeans and boots for a retro vibe.
