It's March, which means it's that time of year again. No, not the perfect opportunity to whip your arms out and welcome Spring (though there is that), but rather McDonald's Monopoly time!
The competition is coming back to the UK for the fourth time - although to be honest, it didn't really feel like it had a fair chance in 2020, seeing as we were all confined to our homes for the first lockdown. More time at home = less time in McDonald's, but this year we're determined to commit to the Monopoly challenge properly.
Here's everything fans of the popular sticker-collecting game need to know about the 2021 version so far, with McDonald's first teasing the news of its return in mid-March 2021. Sadly there's no news of what the prizes might look like for 2021, but considering previous years have included Mini Cooper cars to weekends away, 100k cash (!), we're assuming it's going to be big. We're ready.
What is McDonald's Monopoly?
It's a promotion that allows customers to win prizes by purchasing food items from the fast food chain. It works like this: participating McDonald's restaurants will be offering customers the chance to take part in the game for around a six-week period. Once the game has begun, two or three stickers will appear on the packaging of qualifying items, such as a Large Fries or Chicken Selects, and there are three types of stickers to collect in the game – Online Game Pieces, Property Game Pieces and Instant Win Game Pieces.
The Property Game Pieces can be stuck to a board – available for free in restaurants – and collected in order to win prizes. In 2018, customers could also digitally collect and store their property game pieces on the Monopoly website for the first time. Additionally, it was also possible to win instant food prizes online.
If you collect a full set - for example all of Park Lane or the whole of Mayfair, you'll be eligible to win the prize attached to it, which could be anything from a car to cash! If you don't find a property behind our sticker, you could be granted an 'instant win' sticker, which equates to food items redeemably in restaurants.
This is arguably better for those who like instant gratification, right? Or those of us who are forgetful or likely to misplace things. We can barely find our house keys or wallet in the morning, let alone remember to put our McDonald's Monopoly pieces together while we collect full sets.
When does McDonald's Monopoly 2021 start?
We don't know for sure. Last year's started on March 25, 2020 and historically, the fun event has been known to run in Spring. But when McDonald's first teased fans about the return of Monopoly on March 22, uploading a red carpet graphic to Instagram, they suggested it might be pushed back a bit to later in the year - presumably when restaurants are able to open up properly, rather than just for drive through.
"The news you’ve all been waiting for... Monopoly returns Summer 2021," they wrote to their 227k followers.
Unsurprisingly, the comments were full of people over the moon about the return of McDonald's Monopoly for 2021. "Omg YESSSS 😍😍😍," one person commented, while another added, "This is literally the news we've all been waiting for." Someone else added, "Hot girl summer? More like McDonald’s Monopoly all summer." Other funny comments and tweets included:
"Mcdonald’s Monopoly is happening this year, and I’m still hopeful I might win a mini"
"McDonald’s monopoly was the kick I needed this summer"
"McDonald’s announcing that their Monopoly is coming back this summer has made my day!"
What are the McDonald's Monopoly 2021 prizes?
So far, there isn't much out there about 2021's prizes, and McDonald's have kept their cards pretty close to their chest. But in years gone by, there's plenty to win, like:
£2,000 to spend on a holiday
And, of course, instant win food items, like the Big Mac, six chicken nuggets, ice cream cone, hash brown, sausage and egg McMuffin and so much more.
What McDonald's food pieces participate in McDonald's monopoly?
In the past, a triple label has three game pieces and a double label has two game pieces. While there's no confirmation yet that the rules will be the same for 2021, this should give you an idea of which food pieces participate in the game:

Chicken Selects 3 or 5 Pieces - Triple Label
Chicken Legend - Triple Label

What are the rare McDonald's Monopoly items?
If you're hoping to win big on this year's McDonald's Monopoly, you need to keep an eye out for the rare properties. And much like on the actual Monopoly board, the better the property, the harder it is to get hold of. In 2019, the prizes and properties were as followed:
Dark Blue - Mayfair - £100,000 (four available)
Green - Bond Street - Mini Cooper (15 available)
Yellow - Coventry Street - £2,000 holiday with LoveHolidays (50 available)
Red - Strand - PS4 Pro (500 available)
Train stations - London Liverpool Street - A phone of your choice with a one year Sky Mobile contract (300 available)
Orange - Marlborough Street - Urbanears wireless headphones (1,000 available)
Pink - Northumberland Avenue - £50 JD sports voucher (5,000 available)
Light Blue - Euston Road - £30 Boohoo voucher (14,000 available)
Brown - Old Kent Road - Medium extra value meal (2million available)
Desperate for that £100,000 or Mini Cooper! Surely we've got to win one year, right? RIGHT?
How do I increase my chances of winning McDonald's Monopoly?
Fans of McDonald's Monopoly reckon there are three ways to increase your changes of winning: the first being entering your online codes at off-peak times, the second is to keep an eye out for spare properties on discarded packaging, And the third? Eat more McDonald's!
Enter your codes at off-peak times - apparently, you have more chance of losing out to someone else if you're using your online code at peak times, such as your lunch break, because lots of other people will be doing the same. Why not try doing it early morning, or overnight, when you'll have less competition and more chance to cash in?
Keep an eye on discarded packaging - you'll be amazed at the amount of McDonald's customers that only want the instant win tokens, meaning the online codes and properties get dumped in the trash. If you're willing to do some bin rooting, go for it!
Eat more McDonald's! Because more McDonald's means more double and triple labels, right?
Can you actually win McDonald's Monopoly?
McDonald's says there is a one-in-five chance of winning an instant prize, such as food, adding that 20 per cent of physical tickets include a prize of some sort. When asked whether anyone has ever on the top prize, a spokesperson added:
"Each year millions of prizes are won in our popular Monopoly promotion, including our top prizes. In the first two weeks of the 2018 promotion we’ve already seen two lucky top prize winners of £100,000 cash and a Mini Cooper.
"Almost 2m prizes have been claimed in total to date with another four weeks to go on the competition. We’re keeping a running total including details of the top prizes being won here."
So yes, you can win, and this is probably going to take over our lives for the foreseeable future. You?
