You Can Now Buy This Incredible English Castle for $21 Million
If you've been dreaming of fulfilling your Bridgerton dreams, you now have the chance to own an iconic piece of British history. Ripley Castle, the Yorkshire Dales National Park estate with the same Grade-I status as Buckingham Palace, is now on the market for $21.9 million.
This marks the first time in history that the palace has been for sale, allowing citizens an inside look into this glorious piece of architecture and design. The sale is being split into nine different lots, which can be purchased together or separately. This includes the castle itself, the Boars Head Hotel, a cricket fields, shooting grounds, a store, and over 445 acres of gardens.
The 14th century palace has been owned by the same family for over 700 years. "We feel that we’ve never really had the chance to be spontaneous," one of the estate's custodians, Sir Thomas, told the New York Post. "We’ve been working seven days a week for so long, and we’re nearly 70. Now it’s time for us to travel and be impulsive."
Considered one of the most prestigious properties in England, the Ripley Castle has a long history, deeply embroiled in the country's most pivotal moments. "Almost every detail of the property and its surroundings is steeped in history, having been touched by numerous historical events," Sir Thomas said in the listing. "The castle has played a role in many of them." The castle played a part in the Wars of the Roses, once housed James VI on his way to his coronation as James I of England, was linked to the Gunpowder Plot, and offered a bed to Oliver Cromwell after the Battle of Marston Moor. "These significant moments leap off the pages of history and are reflected in various elements throughout the castle," Sir Thomas added.
Within the palace walls, there is an ornately decorated dining room, various sitting rooms, and a wooden-clad lounge with a pool table. These rooms are total treasure troves, boasting antique paintings, stuffed boar heads, and pieces of furniture that no doubt could belong in a museum.
The potential owner of this property will take on the responsibility of the palace's upkeep, something Sir Thomas notes can be a great privilege. "This is a unique opportunity for the castle’s next owner to add their name to the history books," he noted in the listing. "I sincerely hope that they will love, cherish, and enjoy living at Ripley as much as my family and I have."
