Nike has announced it *will* now sell Mary Earps' England shirt
England may not have won the FIFA Women's World Cup, but Mary Earps has won her battle with Nike as the sportswear giant has announced it *will* now sell her shirt. It's about time, if you ask us.
After initially not including the England goalkeeper's shirt in its WWC offerings – despite having replica shirts for Mary's teammates including Alessia Russo and Millie Bright on offer – the sportswear brand refused to budge on its decision despite mounting calls from fans online. The public backlash only increased after Mary was awarded the coveted Golden Glove award following an impressive penalty save during the tournament's final match that saw the England Lionesses take on Spain, before ultimately losing 1-0.
Finally, following an online petition that received a staggering 150,000 signatures, Nike has announced it is reverting its 'commercial design' and is set to sell a replica England goalkeeper shirt (alongside France, USA and the Netherlands goalkeeper shirts) in the coming days.
Nike's full statement, as sent from a spokesperson to the New York Times, reads: “Nike has secured limited quantities of goalkeeper jerseys for England, U.S., France and the Netherlands to be sold through the federation websites over the coming days, and we are also in conversations with our other federation partners.”
While Nike's decision not to sell her shirt proved controversial before the tournament even began, Mary Earps has seen her fanbase increase innumerably following her seminal display throughout the WWC but particularly in the final game when she was coined 'Mary Queen of Stops'. Pressure for Nike to make a U-turn on their decision grew as a result, and we're glad to see they did.
We're predicting a sell-out. All hail Queen Mary!
