The styling of Nicole Kidman's Vanity Fair 2022 Hollywood Issue cover has been widely criticised by fans.

The Oscar-winning actor was photographed for the magazine wearing a barely-there ensemble from Miu Miu's spring 2022 collection, comprising a low rise micro-miniskirt and skimpy top.

Kidman, 54, is pictured smiling at the camera in the two-piece: a belted, crop top that exposes the Australian star's toned stomach, with a very small matching skirt and long socks - a look reminiscent of the outfit worn by Britney Spears in the 1998 music video for Baby One More Time.

Vanity Fair shared the cover, styled by Katie Grand - the founder of LOVE magazine - on Instagram, captioning the image: "Presenting out 28th annual Hollywood Issue, starring Academy Award nominee @NicoleKidman."

Fans expressed their disapproval of the outfit in the comments, while showing their respect for the actor herself.

"Nicole Kidman is incredible but this styling is terrible. I'm shocked she agreed to this," said one.

Another wrote, "Nicole Kidman is a very talented and beautiful woman, but sadly this outfit ain't it," while another commented, "She’s an accomplished actress who’s nominated for an Oscar. Why is she dressed like a school girl? Not cool."

It seems fan have more problem with the nature of the outfit, rather than the fact it shows a lot of skin, due to a history of sexualising school-girl outfits (and school girls) in the media.

Others wrote, "Absolutely creepy cover", "Ok but who put her in this outfit" and "Why would you do that to her?".

However, some showed their support of the cover, with one expressing, "Haters are gonna hate! Nicole is looking amazing!"

When the Miu Miu collection showed last year, the outfits led to much talk.

Alexander Fury wrote for AnOther magazine, "There was, inevitably, a sense of the sexual – this much exposure of skin and the rawness of torn-away clothing suggest passion.

"Yes at the same time, the clothes didn't victimise in the slightest: Miu Miu's skirts may have been the shortest of the season, but there wasn't a whiff of exploitation or inappropriateness."

Meanwhile, Anders Christian Madsen wrote for Vogue Runway, "Midriffs were elongated to a degree that would have made Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera collectively blush in the early 2000s", adding, "All this, mind you, in the fabrics of a businesswoman’s wardrobe".

Amy De Klerk wrote for Harper's Bazaar, "the low-slung waistline has been reappearing time and time again in recent seasons, and Miu Miu's commitment to the style could certainly be seen as confirmation that this is more than just a passing trend".

Kidman shared the cover to her social media, saying that she was "honoured" to join her fellow actors on the Hollywood Issue. The complete eight cover stars include herself, Kristen Stewart, Idris Elba, Penelope Cruz, Benedict Cumberbatch, Simu Liu, Andrew Garfield and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez.
