Where to head for the UK's cheapest pint... and the priciest one

CASTLETON, ENGLAND - MAY 29: Drinks are served to the band at one the the towns pubs during 'Castleton Garland Day' on May 29, 2019 in Castleton, England. The procession stops at every pub in the village before the Garland is hoisted onto the top of the church. The first records of Garland day date back to the 1700's and though it's true origins are not fully understood it is believed to be an ancient fertility rite with Celtic connections. The celebration also incorporates more recent elements of 'Oak Apple Day' which falls on May 29th, and celebrates the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. The garland is a framework of cut flowers which is prepared on the day by villagers before being placed on the head of the 'King', and paraded around the town on horseback with his 'Consort', also on horseback, dressed in Stuart costume. Ahead of Beer Day Britain on 15 June, Brits who enjoy a nice relaxing pint might need to start thinking about how it impacts their bank balance.

Pub goers in London (£5.19) and Oxford (£4.57) are hit the hardest, according to price comparison experts Money Guru. Drinkers in both these cities pay well over the average per pint.

Meanwhile, a quick drink will cost you £4.35 in Edinburgh, £4.32 in Bristol, and £4.30 in Winchester.

But that’s not to say there aren’t cheaper rounds to be found. Carlisle and Chelmsford are home to the most reasonable pints in Britain, at £2.35 and £2.60, respectively.

A pint in Newport will set you back £2.75, while one in Armagh will cost you £2.78, and Newry £2.80.

With beer prices brewing higher and higher, it’s now a common occurrence for a pint in Britain to set you back £4. But how many drinks would that £4 get you around the globe?

With the average beer costing £5.19 in London, you could only purchase 0.7 of a pint with £4, MoneyGuru found.

Prague is the cheapest city worldwide for buying a beer, with £4 purchasing 3.4 pints. However, Johannesburg (2.4 pints), Taipei (2.2), Krakow (2.2), and Rio De Janero (1.8) follow closely behind.

At the other end of the scale, a single beer in Dubai will set you back £9 — meaning £4 will get you less than half (0.4) a pint. Oslo (0.5), Hong Kong (0.6), Singapore (0.6), and New York (0.7) pints also cost a pretty penny.

This week, Office of National Statistics (ONS) data revealed the average price of a pint in the UK has risen by 86p in 10 years — which is less severe than many might expect.

However, a YouGov poll earlier this month revealed the current price — £3.60 — is 60p more than Brits consider “reasonable.”
