Bratz dolls are making a comeback by inspiring fierce makeup looks

At the break of the 21st century, a new type of doll hit toy store shelves and instantly became a hit with kids worldwide. They were the Bratz dolls, and they gave Barbie a serious run for her money. Today, the little girls who originally loved Bratz are all grown up — and are turning to their favorite childhood toy for some fresh makeup ideas.

Natalie Martinez grew up idolizing Bratz. Martinez is now 19 years old and decided to pay homage to her fave doll by creating a Bratz-inspired makeup look.

“When I was younger I always wanted to be a Bratz doll — I had all of them and the movies,” Martinez tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I always thought Bratz were cooler than Barbie in terms of fashion and makeup; they honestly had a ‘passion for fashion,’ and a lot of girls get inspired by them today still.”

Unlike the classic and wholesome Barbie, Bratz were perceived as fashion-forward and incredibly sassy. They featured almond-shaped eyes adorned with colorful eyeshadow and lush, glossy full lips. Who knew that they’d be ahead of the curve in terms of makeup trends?

Four original 10-inch dolls were released in 2001: Yasmin, Cloe, Jade, and Sasha, and in 2015, a fifth Bratz, Raya, was added to the girl gang. The dolls reached huge success and by the mid-2000s expanded to have movies, video games, web series, and TV shows.

Each of the five Bratz has now inspired makeup looks, and here are some of the best ones.

The trend is not only for girls. Dylan Nicholson says he felt inspired by the dolls because they were “definitely ahead of their time.”

“Bratz dolls’ huge attitudes and dramatic features are envied by many people like me,” Nicholson tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “As a teenager seeing their crazy outfits that showcase confidence is a really great characteristic that growing children and teenagers need to have in their life.”

Although Bratz took a production hiatus in 2014, one if its creators tweeted that they’ll be making a comeback in fall 2018. What inspo will that new launch bring?
